The Largest Chalk painting in the world

On Denmark’s capital Copenhagen’s busy urban street Nørrebrogade or Northbridge Street – did estimated 25.000 people participate in taking the Guinness world record in painting the largest chalk painting in the world

There was birdsong in the speakers, chalks for free and a wish for good atmosphere from the artists organizing the attempt, so everybody could participate and be creative together. For many was it an amazing experience.

The Copenhagen street is 1.3 km long, 18,000 square meters and it was within 3 hours covered in flags, words, drawings, designs and paintings of all colors – by all people.

The previous record belonged to USA from 2008 with a 8,361 square meter painting.
The representative from Guinness World Records Seyda Subasi-Gemici, who is socalled Adjudicator for Guinnes Book of World Records, had arrived from Turkey to follow the attempt.

The idea behind the initiative is the artist Emil Klem and the art association Soulwash from Copenhagen, Denmark. He wanted to give free chalk and good karma

For hem it is an art project with people as mush as a World Record Attempt.

In the end the Danish art group won with a new Guinness world record achievement for the largest chalk pavement art of 18.598 square meters – this is more than 10,000 square meters added to the previous world record from 2008.

Everybody is hurrying up, can we break the record, will we break the record and bring the record to Denmark, to Copenhagen – our hometown. Ofcource in order to break this record, the international guidelines from Guinness Worlds Records must be followed. The guidelines says, that the picture must be chalk lined directly on the pavement. This is the case at the moment as you can see. And it must be measured by a qualified surveyor. We are going to do it to night at around 8 o’clock. Plus it must been one continuous recognizable picture. In case all of this acquirements are fulfilled, this could be a new Guinness World Record achievement for Copenhagen, Denmark. Let’s see”.

PRESS RELEASE FROM SOULWASH

Copenhagen, Nørrebro is turning into the world’s largest chalk painting

1.3 km roadway, 10,000 square meters, all covered in words, drawings, designs and paintings of all colors – made with chalk. It will be a world record, and it’s going to take place on Nørrebrogade, Sunday, August 16. The road is blocked, the permits obtained, chalk ordered and several thousand people have already signed up for the world record attempt.

Behind the initiative is the Nørrebro Association Soulwash, which among other things also were behind the community painting on Blegdamsvej which set a Guinness World Record back in 2011. The idea for the ambitious chalk painting arose when Emil Klem from Soulwash wanted to give a huge thanks to Nørrebro after receiving so much local support through his artistic life. The idea of a chalk painting emerged, Lord Mayor Frank Jensen liked the concept, Nørrebro Local Committee supported the initiative, and shortly after the date was set for August 16, and a team was assembled to realise the dream.

“There is something beautiful and playful about emptying in the street and just draw and paint, just like when you were a child. The idea that all of Nørrebrogade is turned into an almost Latin American color explosion, which it is not one artist, but the entire city, making it together – children and adults, Icelanders and Arabs – the thought is liberating. This single painting might be a nice and playful respite from a serious world where communities become more narrow and closed. Perhaps it would be healthy just to get down on all four with some chalk in hand and just draw a bit”- Sigurd Hartkorn Plaetner, co-initiator.

Free chalk and good karma

Soulwash is in dialogue with Guinness World Records to come to Copenhagen to assign an official world record for the painting from Dronning Louises Bro to Nørrebros Runddel. There will be music, food, and all the chalk is free, so all you have to do is show up and be creative.

The road will be closed for all traffic and the chalk will be laid out at 12:00, Sunday, Aug. 16, and then all the attendees have 10 hours to paint, draw and write before the record attempt ends at 22:00. Whether the painting is washed away that same evening, or whether it is allowed to remain, is yet to be settled.

The project is possible thanks to the Lord Mayor Frank Jensen of Copenhagen, Nørrebro Local Committee and The Tuborg Foundation .
