WORLD PREMIERE ON THE FUTURE OF STREET LIGHTS

STORY

There is world premiere on the future of street lights in Albertslund, Denmark.

In the future will streetlight be turned down to 20%, when there is no movements on the street. The

light will go to 100% again, as you drive, run, walk or bike by the lampposts. And go down to 20%

again.

In the 40.000 people municipal of Albertslund, that is part of the bigger Copenhagen area, are

world history made. 10 km of “intelligent” streetlights have just been set up and will save the

municipal up to 85% of the expenses for streetlights.

You do not feel any differences as you drive, says Kim Brostrøm, Technical Director of DOLL €

Gate 21.

Technicians can also control all the streetlight from his Ipad.

The project Doll & Gate 21 is the largest lab for intelligent streetlight in the world. Never before in

the world has so many international producers of streetlights joined forces with technical research

institutes and municipalities.

The project just started, but the municipal of Albertslund will set up 8.000 intelligent lampposts

within  2 years and all of Denmark will set up 200.000 lampposts within the next 4-5 years.

The streetlights of the western world will be changed within the next 10 years.

Today 20% of all CO2 emissions comes from street lighting.

“The interesting thing is, that when we drive with our car the lightpoles, they light up to 100%

and as the driver you do not have the experience, that you actually now are driving in some

kind of a lightbox.  So. It is an interesting technology with a lot of potentials and a lot of

possibilities of energy saving”.

the future, in order to develop solutions, that we don’t see today, but we know, that we need for

tomorrow.  That is why we have a partnership with the research area, the business and with the

cities around the Copenhagen area. We want to go tot the edge of the future”.

World premiere on the future of street lights

The world’s biggest laboratory for intelligent street lighting premieres this month in

Albertslund, near Copenhagen.

In the future, street lighting will decrease to 0% when there is no car on the road. The lighting

around a vehicle will reach 100% when the car drives by, and thereafter decrease to 20% when the

vehicle has passed.

For the first time

It is the first time ever that corporations, research institutions and a municipality work together on

such a large scale to bring the future of urban living closer. 18 of the world’s largest street light

producers have built the newest street lights over a 10 km network of roads.

“It is the first time in the world, that you see this collaboration happening”, says Bass Boorsma,

Director of Cisco.

Albertslund in Denmark will be the first municipality in the world to save up to 85% on their budget

for street lighting, which in turn will save the municipality millions of tax-money.

“This is money, that we will be able to use for other construction projects such as schools and

roads,” explains Steen Christiansen, the Mayor or Albertslund.

What is the tech behind the new street light system?

More censor-systems

There are various censors: Above the bike paths a censor (Luminex) makes the street lights light

up 2-3 street lights ahead, and turns them off again after 3 minutes. The municipality technicians

can, through an app, control each individual light as well.

Another camera-censor (Philips) ensures that the lights do not turn on if only an animal appears.

Finally, as in many other cities, a censor at the traffic lights controls the street light intensity.

The big control tower has been abolished

Street lights are no longer controlled by a big control tower. They are now controlled in a high-tech

office connected to all the organisations involved.

Through a big screen and an iPad, chief of technology Kim Brostrøm has control of all street lights

in Albertslund; he can even control them in his car driving home.

“When you drive like me now, you do not see that the light is turned down further ahead so it does

not bother your driving” says Kim Bostrøm, chief of technology DOLL & Gate21 as he drives home.

No use of energy and safety

Several other cities around the world are poised to introduce the new street lights, some of which

are driven by solar energy and wind power.

Kim Brostrøm, chief of technology DOLL & Gate21, believes that being a part of the first step

towards developing the intelligent cities of tomorrow is a truly exceptional experience.

Street lighting in the present day is responsible for 20% of CO2 emissions.
