COPENHAGEN LIGHT FESTIVAL 2021 – DENMARK’S MOST VISITED
STORY
As one of the few things during corona has over 30 light installations been set up as oasis of lights in the winter cold season during Copenhagen Light Festival, that will go on until 27th. of February. Darkness gives the light a poetic perspective during the corona restriction in Denmark.
In Denmark you can only meet in groups of 5. In public spaces you need to be able to keep a 2 meter distance.
The need to come out and see the lights amazed the organisers.
A work is called “Corona – the Black Hole Sun”. It is a red ring on the wall of The Nordic House along the inner city canal by Kollision. The work is a re-creation of the recognizable corona, that occurs during a solar eclipse. The artist from Kollission explains” … our entire basis of existence has been put out of play for a short while.”
At the water channel reflects “Dichroic Sphere”in the waters. It is a single light bulb lightning colourful dichroic foil. It is creatively made by internationally acclaimed light artist Jakob Kvist.
“The Sun Horse” is artist Karen T painting on The National Museum of Denmark’s wall in a projectors light. The Sun Horse is one of the oldest findings in Denmark and here seen in a new light.
“Trick Of The Tail” by Arthur Steijn (Holland) is The Little Mermaid, that sits in Copenhagen, under the water swimming away from life on earth, to a natural underwater habitat where other mermaids live. It reminds us of lives – we can not live.
Arthur Steijn from Holland also contributed with “Car Park Holiday”, that comments on “holidays, traveling, memories and the anonymity of driving on the highway. The audience is encouraged to take a closer look at the installation and find their own stories based on their memories and observations”.
The old danish stock exchange from 1620 with lights coming out of the tower is called “Slør” (translate. “Veil” by Bål&Brand (translate. Bonfire & Fire). The artist group explains that “a veil waves out of the historic tower and blows a wind of change over the building and inner Copenhagen”.
The opening of the festival took place as an online opening in the old building.
Many things are on-line due to corona. An on-line map and a mobil app show the routes to each location of the light installation and at each light-art can people listen to the idea of the light art over the mobile phone.
There are routes on 3, 5 and 10 km., that people can walk, run or bike.
During the festival will there be pop-up events, like light angels in 4 groups of 5 light angels that will appear as pop-up events running along the walk, run and bike routes passing the light installations.
The whole light festival is sponsored with green energy from a big danish power supplier.
The “Copenhagen Light Festival” is happening for the 4th. time, but it seems like a new event that will light up Copenhagen for every February in the future.
