STORY
The Copenhagen Marathon had more than 12,500 runners from 103 countries from all over the world and 100,000 spectators gathered in the sun to what some marathon runners call “the best marathon in the world”.
The Danish Capital is this year “UNESCO World´s Capital of Architecture ” and the runners passed the city center in sunshine and the temperature on app. 20 Celcius.
The route is the classic 42,195, but is flat and known among runners to be very fast. In 2019 was the world record set at the half marathon in Copenhagen Half.
The top 10 runners came from Kenya, Uruguay, Morocco and Denmark.
The kenyan runners set the pace and finally the men’s race was won by Solomon Kirwa, Kenya in 2:09,12, 49 seconds from the track-record, but a personal record for the 36 year-old international runner.
A new female record was set by Rodah Chepkorir Tanui from Kenya on 2:23,14.
It was not just a new race record, but also the fastest marathon time of a woman on Danish soil ever.
She was very happy to participate: “Copenhagen town was good, yes. And the fans were also cheering us like – keep on going, keep on moving. It was so fun”, said the Kenya runner after the race.
The Danish championships was also settled in a 5.30 min faster time 2:14,46 and the winner Jacob Sommer Simonsen said after: “It’s such a big event that both, the Copenhagen Marathon and also the Half marathon later this year, are some really really big international events. Really enjoyable.”
48% of the runners came from around the world, which is a new record for the Copenhagen Marathon. Mathias Marcussen from Norway said:
“This is far the best marathon in the world, in my opinion. The best crowd and amazing energy. Lovely weather is always so. Yeah, it was great.”
Also the British runner Matthew Creha said “It was a good run. The crowds were amazing and our Danish crowds were absolutely fantastic out there”
It was the 44th edition of Copenhagen Marathon..
In September will the Copenhagen Half marathon on 21.0975 kilometers take place and a new attempt on the world record will be made.
