Story.

The Tivoli Garden presented The Danish Queen on the stage of the Concert Hall at the annual  Christmas performance.

The Queen of Denmark curtsied on stage for the public after being acknowledged as designer of the scenography to the ballet The Snow Queen by Hans Chrstian Andersen, the fairytale writer originally from Denmark.

For the last month the Danish Queen designed her scenography for the Snow Queen backstage in the 180 year old Tivoli Gardens in the center of Copenhagen.

The Tivoli ballet company consists of 20 classically trained dancers from 17 countries all over the world. They perform 300 ballets per year and the Queen became a in-house designer in 2001

The Snow Queen is her latest big ballet for the Concert Hall.

The work as scenography makes the Queen feel young.

“It’s wonderful to see them, but when we get on stage, and to see them using the costumes and the scenery that I have designed. I’m an older woman by now, But it makes me feel young.”, says Queen Margrethe II

Working with the Queen seems to confirm, that in the creative proces are all the same.

“It’s just like you all become kind of children in your creative way of thinking. And that is something I really love with Her Majesty the Queen, she can also go into that space of just having ideas.”, says Oh Land, the music composer, who used to dance ballet herself.

The Queen is known for using many different colors and forms.

The Queen is also a painter, book illustrator as well as scenographer. Solo Dancer Nadia Skriver Rosenby, 37 has danced in all the Queens ballets and finds her very colorful. Actually in the Snow Queen she is more colorful than ever before.
“The Queen is very creative and she always has a lot of ideas and is not afraid to use colors or different shapes”, says Nadia Skriver Rosenby solo-dancer af Tivoli Ballet.

The Queen’s artistic works often reflect her deep connection to Danish culture and history. The fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen inspires The Queen.
The Snow Queen is a story with a mirror that changes the look and form of the people looking at themselves.
“It’s an attractive performance to my mind. “It’s a lovely story”, says Queen Margrethe II.

The story follows the children Gerda and Kay. Kay is kidnapped by the icy Snow Queen and Gerda  embarks on a dangerous journey and makes fateful choices before finally reaching the Snow Queen’s palace to rescue Kay.

The Queen’s artistic endeavors have added a unique dimension to her public persona and popularity in Denmark.

The reviews have been very good:
”Queen Margrethe tells us that she is definitely no Snow Queen, but rather a constantly curious costume designer and set designer” (Børn I Byen/Children in the City)” There is a feast for the eyes, not least because of Queen Margrethe’s scenography.” (Kulturkuppen/The Culture Compartment).

People in the queue for  the Show Queen, which runs until December 23, think “it’s brilliant that we have a queen that in any area sets the idea of or taking part in the creative industry of Denmark” says Nicolaj Vernal, 33. “Amazing” says Niels Erik Folman, 57. “I mean, who else has a queen who will take part in that kind of a ballet? “So it’s great.”

The Snow Queen was performed during covid in 2019 and 2022, but re-designed for this year’s performance.

Queen Margrethe II has made scenography for 10 different ballets all with fairy-tale stories by Hans Christian Andersen.
