STORY

Roskilde Festival is one of Europe’s largest music Festival with 100.000 participants-

It starts as the workers and students get vacation in Denmark.
However after 50 years it is more than music now.

Ecological projects and support to young people, and good business ideas are part of the festival.
“They come here with all these really cool, circular solutions, but they desperately need a place to test their solutions in order to become just a little bit better and gain the insights that they need to to be able to further develop their product ” Kristine Barenholdt Bruun, Roskilde Festival, Leader Circular Lab.

One of the very obvious ideas is all the tents that people use outdoors. The tent becomes part of the garbage after a week of Roskilde Festival.

Young designer Barbora Surá has created the company “OUR SHIFT”, that looks at re-use of the tents for raincoats.

“For Roskilde Festival we prepared these prototypes of upcycled raincoats because we are solving the issue of people just leaving their tents after the festival is over in the campsite area and there’s just so much waste afterwards which goes to landfills or is burned. So instead of letting this happen, we are taking the fabric from the tents and making these upcycled raincoats.”

Many young people in Denmark are concerned about the CO2 emissions changing the climate.
“I believe that there’s just so much waste around us. And, you know, we know the impact it creates, that it releases CO2 emissions and all this stuff”, continues Barbora Surá, CEO of OUR SHIFT.¨”The fabric from the tents is just great and it’s very sturdy. So it’s perfect for raincoats.”

People think raincoats are a fabulous idea  and many pre-order them over the internet.

Kristine Barenholdt Bruun is really happy to give the young people the possibility of testing product-ideas: “We can see that it creates some sort of change in behavior because of what the guests tell us”.

Barbora Surá also feels that “It’s a really good testing ground for us. And now it’s started raining, even so, the demand is even getting higher. It’s amazing.”

In Spite Roskilde Festival is turning 50 years old. It is still attracting young people with music and participating in their personal development and inspiring them to a more sustainable world.

“So we are here to give young people the possibility of basically changing the world, creating the green, sustainable world that they’re dreaming about. They come here with all these really cool, circular solutions, but they desperately need a place to test their solutions in order to become just a little bit better and gain the insights that they need to to be able to further develop their product.”

“I believe that there’s just so much waste around us. And, you know, we know the impact it creates, that it releases CO2 emissions and all this stuff. So why to waste these resources and not to actually ever use them again? Because they are perfectly fine. The fabric from the tents is just great and it’s very sturdy. So it’s perfect for raincoats.”

“I think it’s such a fabulous idea because if you look around at the festival, there’s so much trash and there will be so many tents left around and normally they just burn them right. They cannot use them again because maybe they are torn apart. So turning them into those raincoats, it’s so cool. I already signed up on the waitlist. I really want to like the green one. I don’t know if you can see it in the background, but it’s so nice.”
