The best Mermaids was found at the Mermaid Cat-walk and Award Festival on Ipanema beach at the Danish Pavilion.
The Mermaid Cat-walk and Award Festival was kicked off in spectacular style with a colourful Mermaid cat-walk show, with glitter and a rainbow galored Danish pavilion on Ipanema
A jury of TV people, Brazilian LBGT and Danes selected the winner of Best Costume and Best Catwalk. This delightfully camp competition was both fabulous and fierce and brought lots of entertainment and rainbow atmosphere to the Heart of Denmark pavilion.
The winner of best cat-walk was Roberta Maria de Padua – a member of the LBGT society in Rio.
The winner of best costume was Brazilian drag and performer Murilo Souza, that felt a strong rainbow celebration at The Danish Pavilion. Murilo Souza made the costume of recycled materials from the sea.
There was lots of fun activities, forinstance could you sit on a rock simular to the real Little Mermaid in the port of Copenhagen and take a selfie.
The Little Mermaid statue is originally placed in Copenhagen and the popular story was written by Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen.
The Little Mermaid became the inspiration for the Mermaid Cat-walk Award Festival
As a celebration of diversity, open-mindedness and cultural exchange, lots of guests from both Rio’s carnival community and LGBT community was invited, which created a lovely happy atmosphere, that made the Mermaid Award Festival a highligth for the already succesfull and Danish Pavilion. The Pavilion has been mentioned as one of the best and most interactive during the Olympics.
Denmark prides itself on welcoming the LGBT community and Denmark was the first country in the world to recognize registered partnerships for same-sex couples. In 2009, it became possible for registered gay couples to adopt, and in 2012 to be married in church.
The cat-walk was set along the Happy Wall, that is celebrating the fact, that the Danes many times has been elected the most happy people in the world.
Denmark is the only country with a Pavilion on the Ipanema beach during the Olympics.

Press release The Heart of Denmark/ The Danish Pavilion
Mermaid Award Festival at the Heart of Denmark pavilion on Ipanema Beach
Denmark has a strong tradition of freedom of speech and values openness and democracy. Denmark also prides itself on welcoming the LGBT community and Denmark was the first country in the world to recognize registered partnerships for same-sex couples. In 2009, it became possible for registered gay couples to adopt, and in 2012 to be married in church.
We wish to honor this tradition at the Heart of Denmark pavilion too, and to create a place for people from across the world to express themselves, share thoughts, and have a good time whether part of the LGBT community or not.
All mermaid and merman fans can join the fun Mermaid activities this Sunday afternoon at the Heart of Denmark pavilion; Take a selfie with The Little Mermaid and/or get your face painted or dress up as a mermaid/-man yourself. The iconic Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen is inspired by the popular story written by famous Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen.
A Mermaid Party kicks off late afternoon in spectacular style with a colourful fashion show, DJ session, glitter and rainbow flags galore before the Mermaid Catwalk and Award Show where the winner of Best Costume and Best Catwalk will be declared. This delightfully camp competition is going to be both fabulous and fierce and is guaranteed to bring lots of entertainment and rainbow atmosphere to the Heart of Denmark pavilion.
As a celebration of diversity, open-mindedness and cultural exchange, we expect lots of guests from both Rio’s carnival community and LGBT community.
