STORY

The world’s largest ever football made of LEGO bricks has been built by the staff at LEGO House during the COVID-19 pandemic to celebrate the upcoming 2021 football event.

As a prelude to the 2021 football event in July, LEGO House employees spend some of their time during the lockdown caused by COVID-19 to build the world’s biggest LEGO football. It was built inside the LEGO House – the experience centre in Billund, the hometown of the LEGO brick.

It took 150 hours to assemble the more than 4.10 meter (13.41 feet) tall brick-built football using no less than 173,600 iconic classic 2×2 LEGO – without glue.

Søren Hansen Hinge, the proud designer and Experience Manager at LEGO House, said: “There is no doubt that there are many different designs we could have chosen to build a football around, but we were inspired by the retro style and well-known black and white football. Something that everyone coming into LEGO House will be able to recognise right away.”

The LEGO football is made up by 75 modules that were then put together in a special metal construction.

During the construction process in the large LEGO Square in LEGO House, cleaning assistant Kathrin Grosen at LEGO House, who contributed to the great build, commented: “It’s a great pleasure to have the opportunity to build together with so many people across the various departments in a safe, but creative way.”

The football weighs 2.5 tons including the construction keeping the parts together.

“The lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has been an extremely difficult time for many people, and I can think of no better way bringing us back together than a major sporting event like this – where I believe Denmark has a chance to go all the way,” says Jesper Vilstrup, CEO at LEGO House.

The world’s largest football made of LEGO bricks will be on display in the publicly accessible LEGO Square until July 11, 2021.
